The vernal , post - restoration of the Jedi Luke Skywalker who appeared in last week’spenultimate episodeof The Book of Boba Fett calculate a gravid deal well than the young , post - restitution of the Jedi , and extremely janky CG Luke Skywalker who clean up Grogu in theseason two finaleof The Mandalorian . However , there was still something off about Luke .
It ’s not justhis sudden adherence to the previous Jedi dogmathat turned his father to the dark side and would have foreclose him from hold open his friend in The Empire Strikes Back . The Jedi ’s voice was still as stilted as Mando Luke looked .
There ’s a reason for that , and it ’s in the main because the man who played Luke Skywalker in the pic , Mark Hamill , did n’t read new dialogue for his proceeds in The Mandalorian , and presumably , just as the visual gist evolve for his return in episode six of Book of Boba Fett , he did n’t here either . While Luke was physically portrayed by a new role player — Graham Hamilton , rather than Max Lloyd - Jones , who played the Jedi in The Mandalorian — the outspoken execution used program send for Respeecher , collating archival material and recording of Hamill ’s carrying out as a young man and creating a soundbank to stitch young material together .

As the show ’s sound editor , Matthew Wood , explained inDisney Gallery : The Mandalorianlast year , “ It ’s a neural connection you course information into and it learn . So I had archival material from Mark in that era . We had clean recorded ADR from the original films , a book on tape recording he ’d done from those eras , and then also Star Wars radio flirt he had done back in that fourth dimension . I was able to get clean recording of that , feed it into the organisation , and they were able to slice it up and feed their neural mesh to learn this data . ”
The consequence ? Something as aurally awkward as the first CG Luke was visually inapt . The tone is correct and some of the inflections are there , but the voice is just a turn too slow … or the pauses are just slightly too long … or there ’s still a flatness underpinning it that makes the voice fathom like it ’s coming from the same uncanny vale as Luke ’s fount .
What I do n’t understand is if Respeecher can de - age voices — which it very much claimsit can do on its site(“Kids say the darndest things … but recording with them can be challenge . With Respeecher , you’re able to easily have an grownup actor phone just like a kid . ” ) then why did n’t Lucasfilm have Hamill record the wrinkle and alter it rather than get the language entirely ? Much like Lucasfilm had Hamill and a young stunt actor do the forcible role on The Mandalorian as opposed to making a purely CG Luke ( frisson ) , could a new , “ bouncy ” vocal performance by a human being for its base have bring forth a near result ?

Oh well . Something differentiate me Lucasfilm is going to have several more chances to keep fine - tuning this Luke in various Star Wars TV series … before they give him his own Disney+ show in 2027 , just in time for the franchise ’s 50th anniversary . Calling it now , guys .
