The promise of Google Music is that it lets you listen to music anywhere . whizz ! Except , for all the unifying promises of its online locker , Google Music does sort of the same thing as your hard drive : It isolates your songs .
It ’s basically theSkull Islandof music services .
Youknow how it act upon : You take the euphony you already own and upload it to the Web where you may get at it from your phone or web internet browser . Essentially , you ’re taking the island of music on your computer and fell it in the cloud .

But it ’s still an island . It ’s still a self - contained unit . You have to manage it yourself . It wo n’t grow unless you manually add tracks to it . There ’s no serendipitous discovery . No societal component . No Pandora or Last.fm - fashion suggestions that shed track you ’ve never learn before , but already screw . Google is n’t offer you a immense , new catalog . It ’s just offering to hold your shit for you .
You love what would have been a really exciting announcement ? If Google announce that it was finally commoditizing music . That — not some on-line tune ghetto — is the next step for euphony services . That ’s the leap we need to make .

Consider NavTeq . Garmin , Magellan , Yahoo Maps , Mapquest , Lowrence , and even XM Radio all bank on the same NavTeq data set . Garmin and Magellan can place themselves apart with pricing , features and form factor , even though both use the same introductory commodity to give birth what users in the end want .
At some point in the future medicine table service — like Rdio and Spotify and likely iTunes and God help oneself me even have sex Rhapsody — will probably be completely commoditized . They ’ll all have the same catalog , but will differentiate themselves by their uncovering , communion , port and legal transfer feature .
I do n’t want another place to simply stack away songs . I do n’t want to be sequestrate . I want to link with new albums and people and artists . I do n’t desire to just move from one island to another . I ’m ready to be deliver .

- take your depository library agree in Google or Amazon ’s locker . If it ’s too big , you ’re still go to have to keep some of it on that island in your screen background .
