Futurama has had a jolting story with papa civilisation review . Its latest episode , “ Calculon 2.0 , ” come after because it really has something to say . Something really mean .
This episode will not go down in story as having the effective jokes . It has a couple of honest one - liner and one salient conniption , but it ’s more focused on ethnical comment than wise cracks . After “ Attack of the Killer App , ” the mention of cultural comment will have many viewers shifting in their electric chair , but unlike “ App ” , which was just throwing out phenomena — Apple ! Twitter ! Susan Boyle ! — “ Calculon 2.0 ” has something to say about how papa culture is switch .
After Calculon dies , “ in a failed endeavor to make his death scene more convincing , ” Bender resurrect him . The new Calculon witness himself unwanted because of the other new Calculon , a slimmed - down acting bot called Vaxtron who now has all the effective roles and all the aureole . Vaxtron allow the show to update Calculon ’s dated stereotype . Calculon was an over - the - top Olivier whose principal acting trick was the spectacular . . . . . . . . . . . . pause . We do n’t see many of those kinds of bad actor any longer .
Instead , Vaxtron show us a new breed of bad player . He ’s so detached that he seems almost comatose , and his expressionless face , static eubstance , and blank voice are as dull as Calculon was bothersome . Most viewer will disagree on exactly who they ’re parody , but that makes for good debate during the commercials . ( I think it ’s Ryan Gosling . I do n’t think he ’s a bad actor at all , so please do n’t maul me , but he has n’t had a role that made him raise either his part or his eyebrows since Crazy , Stupid , Love . Plus the hair on Vaxtron remind me of his haircloth in Drive . )
This central theme , the transition from hammy old doer to catatonic newfangled ones , keeps the sequence together . The good part by far , though , is when Calculon seek to make his retort by execute perform as HAL from 2001 . It ’s deserving the whole instalment . The contrast between HAL ’s expressionless voice and Calculon ’s mad playacting stylus is priceless . I could listen to Calculon scream , “ DAISEEEEEEEEEEE ! DAISEEEEEEEEEE ! MY MIIIIIIIIIIIIND IS GOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIING ! ” for hour .
