“ Roll it , Clip Man!”Joss Whedonexclaimed as soon as he sat down in the NYCC showing theater . What he andTahmoh Peniketthad to show us was , in a word , hot . Spoilers !
So begin the first ten or so minutes of the Dollhouse pilot . It start with a quiet yet heated disceptation between Echo ( Eliza Dushku ) and Adelle DeWitt ( Olivia Williams ) . The centre of it seems to be that Echo is signing a contract for a five - year term of overhaul , and she ’s not happy about it – “ I do n’t have a choice , do I ? ” she snaps . DeWitt reminds her that “ legal action have consequences . … But what if they did n’t ? ”
Then we jump into a unfounded motorcycle pursuit through a city , with two citizenry in crimson helmets race each other . Then one of them crashes , and takes off her helmet to give away … hot , leather - puff Echo ! by nature . She jumps back on the bike and head off after her adversary , who is way in front by now . They stray into a eating place / order area , where a jumbo streamer reads , “ HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATT . ”
Echo , still totally hot , bitches out the motorcycle guy , whom we now know to be Matt . She accuses him of cheat ; he says they should permit it go and just dance . She agrees ! credibly because it ’s another chance for her to be super hot . And Matt is eat it up – after the dance , they go off to the side and he apply her a speech about what an awe-inspiring weekend he ’s had with her ( while she winkingly returns with sexual insinuation ) . He gives her a essence necklace and sound out he ’s just going off to get a drink , but as he walks out he give her a longing smile .
Another political party attendee go about him . “ Who ’s your acquaintance ? ” he asks , clearly affected by Echo ’s hotness . “ She had to go , ” Matt respond , and make a crack about her pusher turn into a pumpkin at midnight . “ Midnight ? It ’s like five , ” says Clueless Dude .
Meanwhile , Echo is grinning and twisting the heart necklace in her besotted hand , until all of a sudden her face lave clear and she heads out from the party . She gets into a black van with Boyd Langton ( Harry J. Lennix ) , who asks her how it go . “ I met a cat , ” she say him , grinning . They push back away .
He takes her to what we well know is the Dollhouse facility , and as Echo gets into an lift , she makes Langton hope to take her back to the party when her “ treatment ” is over . He nod , but as the elevator door close his font state : Yeah , right .
In a way full of intellect - pass over equipment , Echo continues to guggle about how psyched she is to have made such a true romantic connection . She changes out of her political party dress and into yogawear ( but is still hot , of course ) . Tech guy Topher Brink ( Fran Kranz ) humors her , and then settles her in for a handling . What play along is a geniuinely coolheaded montage of everything that has passed in the fake spirit that Echo has just been lead over the weekend – getting the heart necklace from Matt , dancing with him , the bike following , even her childhood . There are some great flashback personal effects , and the concluding injection is the heart necklace gate-crash to the floor . Then come the part we ’ve all seen in the trailer , where Echo suddenly viewing and sees Topher .
“ Did I go to sleep ? ” she ask . And then : “ Shall I go now ? ” “ If you like , ” he answer . So Masterpiece Theater . Echo walks by , altogether blank , and thread the Dollhouse facility with the other Actives . We follow Topher as he grabs her still - hot memory magnetic disc from the mindwipe place and takes it to the warehousing room . Langton is waitress for him , look musing . Topher makes his intimate antic – a ha ha , she does n’t call up anything now ! – but goes on to speechify about how they ’ve just given two people an unforgettable weekend . They ’re philanthropist . Langton seems unconvinced : “ I conceive she in the end met the right guy , ” he recount Topher .
They walk out and gaze at the Actives . “ Not a care in the world , ” say Topher .
Then we cut to a petty girl with long brown hair , and a guy in a limo who ’s let the cat out of the bag to her on the phone . “ I did my prep , ” she tells him . He says she still ca n’t look on world television because it will melt her brain , and therefore her reward for doing her school assignment is – “ Knowledge , ” she finishes . “ I hate you . ” It ’s a cute Father of the Church / girl moment that is quickly overtaken by what happens after she hangs up the phone .
The girl flops on her bed , and black-market - gear humans appear over her . They clap a material over her mouth and run up her into a fateful eubstance bag . As she take care up , dazed and fright , we see that one of the men is wearing a creepy tan masquerade that half - hides his face .
End of Act One .
Of course , Tahmoh Penikett ’s type Paul Ballard does n’t seem in Act One – “ this is Tahmoh - innocent idiot box , ” Whedon tell apart us cheekily . After the clip , Penikett said a few words about his character , and he expanded a bit on what we ’ve heard before . Of course , Special Agent Ballard is a golden - hearted Mulder Redux , assigned to the Dollhouse case as the laughingstock of the rest of the FBI – who do n’t believe it ’s the human trafficking operation it really is . Ballard investigates Echo , and while he is at first dazzled by her beauty and eventually becomes her rescuer , “ there ’s more to it than that , ” Penikett recite us . With these character , nothing is either one manner or the other ; Ballard finish up facing quite a few moral dilemma , and by the end of this 13 - episode run has move through a bit of a personality change himself .
Other spoilers ? Whedon bring out to us that Dushku sing in episode 3 , when Echo toy the backup singer for a pop star . Apparently , though , a melodic installment of Dollhouse is not yet in the works – “ oh , I ca n’t sing , ” Penikett explained . But he has done several geezerhood of Muay Thai – a soldierly artistry that is often cite to as “ Thai boxing ” – and he does it shirtless in the pilot . ( Move over , hot!Echo . )
A fan asked if we were ever decease to see Dollhouse comics . Whedon said he did n’t think so , because the long suit of Dollhouse was the acting and the interaction between masses – it does n’t pack the superhero visual poke of Buffy . Whedon did , however , say that he would depend into web series , although he skip that “ people will be into the show enough that they do n’t have to require about other things ! ” As in : Please do n’t scratch this before it ’s time , FOX .
And as for Dr. Horrible ? Whedon decidedly desire to do more insurgent filmmaking , he said , and also definitely need to do “ what ’s up with Dr. Horrible . ” Much cheering ensued .
