Hamish Steele : Amazing ! I was so delirious to announce another season because even in the last couple of weeks I ’ve really feel the fandom maturate and growing . I see so much fan graphics and tiktoks and theory flying around — it feels great to give this respectable news to everyone .

What ’s it intend to you writing and championing Barney ’s journeying during all this — and realize the chemical reaction to him when the first season remove Netflix ?

Steele : When the show was pitched back in 2018 , I naively thought that mayhap things would be well when it come out , that Barney would n’t be such a vainglorious business deal . Now I do n’t recognize if it came out at the good clip or the wrong time , to be honorable . particularly making a show in the UK where transphobia feels like our master export , it at times felt shivery to be so visible . But it also makes me gallant that we were capable to be one output company where we could make our team safe and make it percipient where we endure . When I create Barney in the original webcomic , I did n’t consider twice about making him trans . He represented boring normality to me , to contrast the fanatical ogre world . It take a while for me to adjust to him being so unique as a TV protagonist . For a lot of viewers , both kids and adults , he might be the very first trans person they really get to know . I ’m really happy the response to him has been so overconfident .

Steele : Barney and Logs will take their relationship to the next level and we ’ll get to see them trying to make being boyfriends in a world filled with ghost , demons , and zombi work . All I ’ll say is I ’m really proud of the narrative and it comes from my own experiences . I hope it ’s very relatable even if it ’s not the most sunshine and rainbows management people were hoping for . Our show has always sample to have one invertebrate foot in reality , even with all the paranormal shenanigans . Sometimes things do n’t always have happy endings , but agitate through the pain in the neck and coming out on the other side is what is important .
io9 : What can we ask from the angel , the mysterious villains teased at the sexual climax of the first time of year ?
Steele : Why do you say villain ? What about a mysterious masked creature zapping away season one ’s big tough makes you say villain ? Ha ha ! Well yes … Season two will be about what ’s upstairs rather than just what ’s down . We ’ll get to satisfy some angels but we ’ll also search the fiend more and explore more of their airplane . One Angel Falls we ’ll be meet was a major theatrical role in the playscript but was n’t in season one . That ’ll be Fingers , played hilarious Jamie Demetriou . He ’s now a season steady , appear in all the episode . But again … friend or foe ? ?
io9 : Can sports fan expect the show to play with more genre as we go into the Modern time of year , like with the melodic episode in season one ?
Steele : Yes ! We do sport a match more birdsong and we have a whole Sports Movie episode when Barney link the Demon Wrestling Federation . Our season finale will be even more epical than last sentence . But we also have some episodes which experience way more like proper sitcom secret plan rail line than in season one . We also have two kind of observational episodes later in the season , which take topographic point at the same time from two unlike fictitious character ’ perspectives .
io9 : Where do you desire Dead ending goes beyond this — do you see a future where it pass away beyond what was laid out in Deadendia ?
Steele : There ’s three books ( Book 3 is on its path , promise ) so I would lie with three time of year to tell the full fib . But it ’s up to the Netflix gods . I ’ve also had idea for spinoffs but I do n’t want to get anybody too emotional . What matters at the moment is that time of year two is an even braggart hit than time of year one .

Steele : frankly , I always knew there ’d be some hate for the show from bigot and the right . It never bear on me — haters gon na hate , etc etc . What did matter to me was making sure that the community we made this show for , knew it existed . Because I do it so many the great unwashed would love this show if they only learn a bit of it . I come from fandom . I ’ve been that peculiar living fan watching Rebecca Sugar watercourse and drawing Adventure Time fan artwork . So it only feels right to be that person for others and engage as much as possible with the kinda fandom I live I would ’ve been a part of if this was n’t my show . I love doing events like this and talking to pansy - focussed media because I know they get us , and I do n’t have to put the LGBTQ+ 101 kid gloves on .

Steele : I have in mind it ’s not not bad ! And honestly , I worry that this “ backlash ” is n’t being heard at all .
