It ’s been almost four years since 33 Chilean mineworker were trapped below the airfoil of the earth for 69 days . A story published this week byThe New Yorkerreveals some additional stunning details about their harrowing saving , and some astounding fresh entropy about the mine itself .
As part of his forthcoming book Deep Down Dark , Writer Héctor Tobar take usinside the poorly - fated San José Mine , a subterranean city carve out throughout the decade where temperature would give up to 104 degrees with 98 percent humidness . It was also a situation that was known to be dangerous : wound and accidents had plagued the mine long before the 2010 incident , and safety systems that were promise were never installed . Here are a few of the more jaw - dropping fact gleaned from the article .
It was a mine as deep as the Burj Khalifa is tall : 163 taradiddle . To get to the bottom , you would push down a four - mil road — diagnose the Ramp — which corkscrew into the infinite with enough room for multiple vehicles ( it had actual dealings signs). The mine was literally an cloak-and-dagger skyscraper , with rooms and hallways and “ floors ” measured by their distance from sea degree : The incoming was Level 800 ( 800 meters above ocean level ) , the miners were trapped in a space around Level 90 , 2,300 feet below the open . The shard of rock that fall into the mine , creating the crash that trapped the miners inside , was 45 stories magniloquent : “ It was after count on to weigh seven hundred thousand slews , twice the weight of the Empire State Building . ”

The Refuge was the shoes the miners were supposed to go in display case of an emergency . It was “ schoolroom - sized ” and had a white tile trading floor , a clinker - pulley bulwark , and a steel room access , which blew open in the blowup . The electricity , intercom , and access to fresh air and water had all been discerp . There were enough commissariat to keep 25 men alive for 48 hour : “ One can of salmon , one can of yellowish pink , one can of peas , eighteen cans of tuna , twenty - four liters of milk ( eight of which turned out to be bumble ) , ninety - three packages of cookies , minus the one that had been eaten , and some expired medicines . There were also two hundred and forty plastic spoons and forks , but only ten liters of bottled water . ” They ended up drinking from the tank of industrial water cloud with oil .
Even though they were trapped far beneath the earth , they still care to use the engineering around them to stay alive . The mineworker were able to save ( strong-arm ) vim by drive their vehicles to haul water from various levels of the mine . One of the miners used a cellular phone telephone to record picture of themselves . At first they were worried about being left in utter darkness — which they believed would make them unsighted — but they were able to file their headlight batteries using the generators of the truck . Once the recitation break off through from the surface , the saving teams sent down a video photographic camera and a telephone set receiver to communicate with the humanity above ground , and a projector so the miners could learn television of themselves as global heroes .
