Here ’s what Hull tells us about the process of create a whole new dystopian urban center :

In Early 2010 the Wachowskis gave me their epic hand to read and described this incredible motion picture they wanted to make with Tom Tykwer ( theatre director of Run Lola Run ) . After read it , I was in awe of their vision and sheer guts to take on such a cinematic challenge … wrestle six stories together across hundred of sentence .

I think I am the target audience for this movie , I know Science fiction , but also movies that dare to undertake big ideas . And trying to weave moral pattern of the human experience across six C of fourth dimension is ranked a difficulty degree of 10 to say the least . My take away on the overall motif is – that the sum of the human experience is come to by a series of choices that we all have to make … and those decision , cruelty , benignity , bravery – can undulate across meter and interlink us to our past tense and pave our time to come . They really reached for the moon on this one , and I am quite honored to have been affect .

In 2010 , the directors were go on nonplus funding for the epical handwriting and needed some construct artistic creation to follow it . To commence Lana and Andy asked me to do a keyframe from the Somni 451 story , to help deal the action and visuals of the picture . They described a chase scene across a futuristic Seoul Korea , with radiate ribbons of thruway arteries . I had a limited amount of time and designing new ships and computer architecture lead more than the day I had . So in the following keyframe , you may see I blot out most of the gunship in the extreme foreground and worked in the first place on weighing machine of the cityscape . This was the first persona I create for Neo Seoul . It was used ( in addition to storyboards by Steve Skroce and other ikon ) to help get more interest and of grade money to kickstart the flick !

The picture went up and down during the tumultuous funding phase angle and I got entangled into another film for over 6 months . Eventually Cloud Atlas successfully got off the ground and I was excited to retrovert to designing Neo Seoul .

I was tasked with creating the big picture city design and master shots for this quintessential Wachowski news report . Over skype Roger Huntington Sessions with Lana and Andy , we would talk about trends in architecture and approximation on where it could go in the hereafter . They are very into architecture . I assume it make out from thier background as detergent builder . Some manager would just say “ put a futuristic city in the background ” , but with the Wachowskis , they talk about the account of skyscraper and how building materials have dictated the shifts in architectural linguistic communication . From stone towers to metal and glass we think over the next leap in architectural vocabulary- nano built structures , organic tegument with solar cells etc . Much of this geographic expedition was just too unmated look and I left it out of this gallery . We came to realize we like a certain storey of “ column ” embodiment to our skyscraper . So I work on unequalled erect shape that were organic but not too crazy and composing a layout that could bear a lot of the detail and information that they wanted , yet still be clear . I used warm and cool temperatures to facilitate separate the foreground to background painting carpenter’s plane for astuteness and to help maximize scale and aerial perspective .

My favorite art from the picture however are the painting for Old Seoul . I remember a great skype session with Lana and Andy , they come in with the idea of older Seoul being flooded by rising sea and Neo Seoul uprise up like a manmade mountain . As they were describing top of flooded towboat , I closed my eyes seek to picture it in my head . I forthwith merged their description with a pic of a plenty range in Vietnam that spiked out of the ocean like jumbo finger’s breadth with tiny fishing boats juxtaposed against them for scale . This was the inspiration for the aristocratic simulacrum “ view from inside the floodgates ' ” . We brainstorm ideas for dike and levee that would hold back the ocean . I went to body of work offering up layout and theme about the evolution of a flood city . I used a 3D program call sketchup to help oneself me quick block out hundreds of buildings and different elevations . It allow me to try out with the flood lamp height and perspectives for paper . I started with circular designs for these dams- that possibly 100 year before neo seoul , were erected to save the financial and other important dominion from the go up ocean .

When I return with sketches , we keep have new ideas about what might bechance in an abandon flooded metropolis . I recall the slums I had seen in Cairo , Mumbai and pic of Favellas in Brazil , and Kowlon in Hong Kong . It is unfortunate and sad what conditions huge populations of humans are forced to live in , and yet fascinating what structures we come up with to hold out . I sketched shack dwellings growing up the floodgate wall like a coral reef , suppose the fishing villages I image in Cambodia on top of ( almost ) deluge skyscraper tops like an island string , flotilla of ships create city blocks with low technical school bridges , overturned crude turnout retrofitted for tax shelter , third world fishing boats with holographic ad , high tech gear for defence reaction and communicating , etc . Now to make all that into pictures !

This is my favorite vista of my job , when managing director lock me intellectually and artistically . This is why I enjoy working with the Wachowskis . They are so friendly and respectful of the aesthetic craftiness , that I observe I work on a different frequency … one of respect for the share collaboration . Now I voice like the expectant sycophant , oh well .
