Al Rokeris looking forward to his first Christmas as agrandparent.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Root 100 Gala in New York City on Tuesday, Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts opened up about their festive plans with granddaughter,Sky Clara Laga, 6 months, and her mom and dadCourtney RokerandWesley Laga.

“I think for us it’s really just family," Deborah adds of the family’s Christmas plans. “It’s really all about family and our family is so spread out that we don’t have to gather as much as we’d like to during the year. So this year it really is just about tight-knit.”

Rokeropened upabout Sky’s birth during an emotional moment onTodayone week after her birth.

“It is magical, it really is,” he said. “The thing is, everyone tells you it’s going to be ‘this thing’ and you don’t know; it’s like when they tell you about having your first child. And then to hold this little girl, knowing almost 35 years ago I held her mom? And here she is, 5 lbs., 15 oz. 19 inches long, and she’s just perfect.”

Al Roker Grandpa Moments

Roker’s holiday celebrations will be particularly meaningful this year after he spent the previous festive season recovering from health issues.

“From our family to yours,” Roker wrote, adding the hashtag “#merrychristmas.”
