Josh Ulrich ’s webcomicNewman(also onTapastic ) is put in mishmash of our world and a phantasy world , where human being and hob rub elbows with orcs and Drow , and people are devoured by the occasional lake monster . Newman is an employee at a monster extermination company who is pining over Emaline , the long - full term girlfriend he thought he was travel to marry .
It ’s only when he ’s partnered with Gwen that he finally ascertain a way out of his Casimir Funk . The Drow lady is cheerful and open , and she apace pushes Newman out of his consolation zone — which is on the button what he needs . It is n’t long before he realise that Gwen is a far better compeer for him than Emaline ever was .
But life is n’t mere for ogre hunters , especially when they ’re not from opposite English of the world ’s surface . When they ’re not taking down gargantuan spiders or eldritch goop , Gwen and Newman have to vie with mind ascendency , lycanthropy , and one unpleasant Drow female parent . You know , the common peril of dating .
Newman is ultimately light - hearted , though , and what makes it work is that , through it all , Gwen and Newman ’s human relationship is an extremely useable one . It ’s nice to see two character deal with monstrous stressor and familial strangeness , only to hunker down and nestle at the end of the solar day . Ulrich is so terrifically playful with his world and his characters that we ’re almost convinced that date a Drow would be utterly delicious .
