When it come to the cosmos of Blade Runner , the mysteries have always been better than the solutions . Part of why a sequel like Blade Runner 2049 even exists is because the original film asked so many surd questions and have so few concrete answer — and it ’s a tradition that keep with the new film .
To be mediocre , Denis Villeneuve ’s Blade Runner 2049 feels like it has more answers to its bigger questions than Ridley Scott ’s 1982 master copy . But there are some certainly enough mysteries and easy destruction to keep us talking , whether or not another Blade Runner movie ever gets made .
Below are some of the interrogation we had about 2049 , some word of what the answers might be ( if any ) , and then a few other thing we ’re just egotistically curious about .

Is Deckard a Replicant?
This is the Blade Runner question to end all Blade Runner interrogation , and one that is , wisely , still not answer in Blade Runner 2049 . Instead , the riddle is only made more complex . So , for example , fans would postulate “ If Deckard is a Replicant , how can he be alive 30 years later ? ” Simple . Blade Runner 2049 introduce the concept of the Nexus 8 , a new model Replicant with an elongated lifespan . We also get wind there have always been sophisticated models of Replicants with hush-hush power , such as Rachael in the first pic . So maybe he ’s one of them .
Then again , throughout Deckard ’s limited concealment time in the film , he ’s in spades human in his actions . For instance , he does n’t jump through a wall to escape in Las Vegas , something his Replicant companion K , a.k.a . Joe ( Ryan Gosling ) , does quite easily .
Then there ’s Deckard ’s daughter . Blade Runner 2049 makes the bombshell revelation that he and Rachael , a Replicant , had a daughter . The film break that Tyrell , the Maker of the Replicants , especially engineered Rachael to have the ability to reproduce . Then , it ’s proposed by Tyrell ’s evil heir , Niander Wallace ( Jared Leto ) , that Deckard may have also been created for the only use to be with her , so it kind of comes down to the science of it . Is it more credible that Tyrell figured out a way to create life between a homo and a Replicant , or to create spirit between two Replicants ? We ’ll probably never know , but it ’s sure enough an interesting question .

How did Wallace not know Deckard and Rachael’s child was working for him?
Most of Blade Runner 2049 is a race between Joe and Luv ( Sylvia Hoeks ) to find out the miracle tike of Deckard and Rachael . However , later we learn that the child is Dr. Ana Stelline ( Carla Juri ) , a woman who has been working for Wallace for years , creating dreams that are embed into Replicants . For a human that cognize so much , it seems a bit funny that Wallace did n’t be intimate Ana was the person he was looking for .
There ’s no classic answer to this question but there are some possibility . One is that perhaps Deckard ’s efforts to cover up all record of his whereabouts and of his nipper were so thorough , Wallace could n’t have know who she was . And though Wallace have intercourse the child existed without being told ( more on that below ) , it seems probable that Deckard and his champion just made it very hard to find out his child ’s identity . And then , growing up with such unique DNA , she used her potential to become this talented doctor .
Is Joe permanently dead?
In the last moment of 2049 , as Deckard finally meet his daughter , we see Joe lie down on the steps and , apparently , die . The film sure enough suggests that he ’s dead ( or “ go to sleep , ” in Blade Runner speak ) but he ’s a Replicant . Even if he is “ retire , ” you have to suppose he could be play back , if a story call for it ? We even see some common law for that earlier in the picture show .
However , writer Michael Green shut that down . Speaking toEntertainment Weekly , Green pronounce , “ I was surprised to find out that anyone thought he did n’t die . And I can say this : the non - casual fan might recognize the euphony cue that plays in that import . ”
( It ’s the music from the “ Time to Die ” scenery in the original . )

How can a Replicant have a baby?
“ have me tell you about the birds and the bees . ” earnestly , though , this is a question we ’re wondering about but do n’t believe can ever actually be answered . All we recognize is that Tyrell , the original creator of the Replicants , figured out a path for one to give giving birth , but kept it very , very secret . We do n’t know if the mother need human deoxyribonucleic acid or if Replicant DNA lick . All we know is Tyrell ’s discovery is something Wallace wants to exploit for his profit — but any actual logistics or scientific discipline will probably never be explained .
What’s next for the Deckard family?
A very unlikely family unit reunification takes place at the ending of Blade Runner 2049 , that of Rick Deckard and his daughter Ana , who is either half - Replicant or full Replicant . Either fashion , she ’s the first nestling with a Replicant mother , basically stool her the most crucial individual on the major planet . How she and her beginner will palm that Book of Revelation and choose to keep is another one of those questions that can only be answer in another sequel ( or fan fiction ) . So we ’ll see . However , with Wallace still out there , still powerful , and still hungry for the answer Ana hold , risk is certainly looming for them .
How does Wallace even know that Tyrell made a Replicant who could—and did—have a baby?
The Apocalypse that Rachael had a child is one of the big twists at the origin of Blade Runner 2049 and is handled as such . The characters are as appalled as the audience . However , soon after — and very matter - of - factly — it ’s give away that Wallace already know . How ? Well , presumably being the current owner of what used to be the Tyrell Corporation has some fringe benefit . Like maybe Wallace had access to some cloak-and-dagger single file where the former owner uncover these thing . On the flip side , though , if classified files are how Wallace found out , why did n’t Tyrell written document how he did it ? Given how apace the plastic film moves past this , this is evidently not a concern in the Blade Runner earth . But still , it ’s curious .
What is the significance of 15 December 2024?
6/10/21 . These numbers are written on the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree at Sapper Morton ’s farm , next to where we know Rachael was forget , and on the wooden Equus caballus Deckard carve for his daughter . Blade Runner 2049 never quite severalise us what the identification number think of , but it ’s a safe presumption that was the solar day Ana was born , and the day Rachael conk . She is buried under the numbers , after all , and putting a date of death on a grave is a , presume we say it , very human thing to do .
What’s up with the Replicant resistance Mariette is working for?
Near the close of the flick , Joe is confronted by a Replicant resistance which Mariette ( Mackenzie Davis ) has been working for . Their leader , Fresya ( Hiam Abbass ) , essentially wants what Wallace wants : for Replicants to be capable to reproduce . But she also wants them to be free . The implication here is that a larger Replicant uprising is tardily in the whole shebang , but Blade Runner 2049 never really pays this off . It plant it up and entrust it be , in what ’s the most obvious of several potential clues that 2049 may just be the first of more Blade Runner films . Even if we never see it playact out , it ’s a safe bet that world has some problem coming its way .
How the hell did the filmmakers bring back 2019 Rachel?
One of the film ’s biggest surprise is when Wallace produces a near - perfect replication of Rachael circa 2019 , the year the original movie took shoes . Bringing back grapheme from the grave accent or constitute actors look young is pretty vulgar in motion-picture show these mean solar day ( see : Rogue One , Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 ) , but Rachael , calculate exactly as she did when played by Sean Young in 1982 , is by far the best one yet . She looks damn near perfect and not like some kind of amply computer graphic creation . There were reportsthat Sean Young filmed some mystical scenes for the movie but , for now , the proficient unconscious process remains a mystery . However , unlike most of the enquiry puzzle above , this is one we will almost certainly get an result to .
